The History of Reply42.com (Room42.com) Collection of Mini Sites

Basal Metabolism Calculator (basal metabolic rate)

nomogram This (basal metabolic rate) site is a individual calculator of Basal Metabolism (grams of fat, protein, carbohydrate) using individual height, weight, age and activity rate.

This PHP program calculates basal resting and active metabolic caloric rates. It came into existence as a teaching tool, so that daughter could teach Dad how to program in 1988 Amiga Basic. Dad is diabetic, so the exact proper balance of nutritional elements was of importance to him. graph Dad had this ancient book (say 1950's vintage) with a graphic, where for example, you located your weight on one line, and your height on a different line, and by laying a ruler between the points on their respective lines, crossed yet another line, etc. Dad is also a spacey old physicist from the vintage that remembers slide rules, so he could actually figure out the algorithms for the lines on the printed page. Daughter is actually an old graphics programmer from the early '80s vintage, so she knew the line crossing algorithms. The results of the father/daughter collaboration are the algorithms for this program.

It was ported by the daughter, first to the web in Java (1996), as a Technology Demonstration for the fledgling Room 42 Software LLC. Yahoo picked this Java demonstration applet as one of its Best of the Best Sites. It was then (1996) I (the daughter) realized how very interested, so many people were in Calories, Protein, Carbs, and Fats. This Basal Metabolism web site took on a life of it's own. Later, I ported the code to Perl/CGI for stability (early Java had bugs). More recently, I ported The Basal Metabolism Calculator to PHP, as a learning experience for me.

The Bear Paw Ranch Resort

Bear Paw HomePlanning a better holiday this year? We are the Northern Experience that's really wild.

  • Bear Paw Bear Paw
  • Spectacular Fishing!
  • Wildlife Photography!
  • Scenic Horseback Riding!
  • White Water Adventure!
  • Luxury Stress Release!

This mini web site came into being in 1997. The folks that run the Bear Paw are really good friends of mine, so I thought for practice; I would build them a web site. If I were building this site today, I would build it differently, but then was then, and now is now.

Northern Canada Photography: Photo Gallery

Cas Sowa Northern Wilderness Photography Gallery.

It was Cas, who discussed with me in 1997, the ways in which the then fledgling e-commerce could work. Cas lived so far north in the wilderness that he had no Internet access for many years to come. I put up this mini site for him. I don't know whether anything ever came of it, for him - but, he had a web site, at a time when few photographers did. I can see in my web log stats, that searching on "Cas Sowa" must bring up this site of his, because "Cas Sowa" is in my keyword phrases.

I've been updated. Cas's site does reach Cas.

I am a member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) and know a lot of outdoor photogs ... around the world. But few live in an area like that around Smithers.

ASCII to EBCDIC to BINARY - Packed Decimal - Zoned Format - Cobol Comp-3

code tablesThis site came into being in 1998, as a pure stab into commercialism. When sending data encapsulated in a network packet between EBCDIC machines and ASCII machines (or visa versus), programmers need to translate from one character set to another. Here is a handy reference chart for both the ASCII codes and the EBCDIC codes, as well as the decimal, hexadecimal, and binary representations. These are the code tables programmers need to do ASCII to EBCDIC translations, and programmers buy books. Lots of books. Lots of Amazon.com Affiliate Books. I have received emails from Italy, Singapore, Jordan, Argentina - all over the world, it is the same. Their boss gave them the task of doing the code translation, but gave them no reference tables to accomplish their task. This site is that reference.

Bipolar Essays

mixed statesI was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder 1, Rapid Cycling, Mixed States, with Psychosis in 2001. Much to my surprise, the medical profession really couldn't help me much. I began writing this mini site in 2003, by which time, I had a much better handle of what the medical profession could, and could not do. There was so much they couldn't do, but I had begun to learn about self-management techniques, I could do myself. Apparently, as the years have gone by, these things I can do for myself, are actually way more important then what the doctors do, as they effect my day to day life. I didn't publish this mini site until 2005, just after I had survived a near deadly attempt on my life. I was driven to update the essays with the critical self-management strategies for staying alive, despite the Bipolar. I was driven to stay alive.

Name That Tune Game for 60's / 70's Songs.

name that tune gameBuilding this mini site was me, (an old retired computer geek), playing with the technology of both PHP and javascript. It was particularly fun to switch out the "frowny face" (you don't know the song) for a little image of a runner breaking the ribbon (symbolizing you got the song title correct). This Name That Tune Game gives you a song snippet lyric clue. You answer what is the name of that song? Interactive real time play with 430 different songs. I particularly enjoyed making the Free Content of a Name That Tune Prompt.

Possible Meaningful Activities:

meaningful activity promptThis mini site was also me, (an old retired computer geek), playing with the technology of both PHP and javascript. I am retired. World Health Organization (WHO) says the secret to living a positive active retirement is to stay busy physically, mentally, and socially. As my 80 year friend knows - you got to stay busy. "An activity that is meaningful to me, might not be meaningful to you. It's not that an activity is inherently meaningful or not meaningful, but rather that you find the activity meaningful."

If you don't make a point of doing otherwise, the vast majority of retiree's spend most of their time either cleaning the house and / or watching TV --- so:

  • stop making cleaning your house your entire life
  • stop making watching TV your entire life

There are 372 possible activities in this list.
I particularly enjoyed making the Free Content of a Meaningful Activity Prompt. It displays 6 possible activities, but if you refresh your browser, a brand new set of 6 activities are displayed.

Our Pointing Labrador Retrievers

Our Labs. Best Friends. They Both Point. Someday Soon They'll Have Puppies Together.

Sally Anne PointingThis mini site was built with the anticipation of our Labrador Retrievers having puppies one day. I wanted to place a URL in the newspaper ad, where they could go for more information. Any of these 3 URL's will work:
http://reply42.com/labs
http://ourlabspoint.com/
http://reply42.com/labrador/

Grand Junction - Photo Gallery

Grand JunctionI was taken by the various cool layouts that could be had for photographs. As I used to live in Grand Junction, Colorado - I had a whole inventory of photographs from there. I put this mini site up because I could (I had the photographs) and because I was taken by the cool front page layout. Per my web logs, every now and then, I have just the photograph someone was looking for.
